First original Buffy novel. Monster of the day is Samhain, the pumpkin king, a Halloween demon with a scarecrow body and a pumpkin head who had killed other slayers before meeting Buffy. Second Buffy novel and starting place for Buffy authors' fascination with carnivals. This one hides a coven of were-coyotes. Monster of the day is the Master (not exactly a new entry), but the novel is noteworthy as Cover delves into spiritualism and/or reincarnation. Buffy and the Slayerettes revive the story of a slayer during a Puritan witch hunt. Novels start addressing classic themes in the history of the occult more rarely mentioned in the TV show. Ancient artifacts, preferably exotic, are as fascinating as carnivals for the Buffy authors. Here the artifact is a Far Eastern sword, whose arrival in Sunnydale frees the vampire Chirayoju and in turn causes his sworn enemy, the Mountain King Sanno, to appear. First Buffy novel introduced as aimed at the general public, not only "young adults", and very possibly the best Buffy novel. Original treatment of the medieval myth of the Wild Hunt, a cavalcade of ghosts believed by some scholars to be at the origin of the modern vampire mythology. A carnival-like Renaissance Fair hides, as usual, more than what meets the eye. The Buffy novelists' exploration of esoterica continues with Druids. They continue as a secret society today and have their own way to fight evil, occasionally verging on evil itself. Buffy does not like it (although he likes a young Druid, one of the few romantic interests for the Slayer in the novels other than Angel). Monster of the day is the korred, a creature feeding on life-force. It is less convincing than other monsters; more persuasive are a secondary character from the TV show, magician Ethan Rayne, and Willow as she starts her exploration of real magic. Christopher GOLDEN - Nancy HOLDER, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Ghost Roads. The Gatekeeper Trilogy: Book Two" Christopher GOLDEN - Nancy HOLDER, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Sons of Entropy. The Gatekeeper Trilogy: Book Three" The Trilogy includes a brand-new mythology, not found in the show: the century-old struggle between white and black magic. Buffy and the Slayerettes help the Regnier dynasty who act as Gatekeepers, whose mission is to prevent the Hell from breaking loose on Earth. The Reniers' enemies are the Sons of Entropy, an evil order of black magicians whose crazy leader wants chaos to erupt and eventually kill every human being (including his own followers). In order to help the Regniers, Buffy, Angel and Oz should learn to use the "ghost roads", connecting magically significant points on earth and traveled by the ghosts of the dead. The conspiracy is so deep that it has infiltrated the Watchers' Council, but Giles unmasks it and even finds a love interest. Chock-full of references to European esoterica, alchemy, and Renaissance magic, although the authors take some liberty with history. Another object of fascination for Buffy authors are archeological digs. Here, a lantern offers the opportunity to re-explore the world of fairies (or "faeries"). They turn out to be quite malevolent, although they have the ecological excuse that their habitat is roughly disturbed by humans. No fairy tale. Archeology again: an evil Aztec god and his academic high priestess hunt for victims in Sunnydale, until Buffy uncovers the plot. A girl demands that Principal Snyder allow her to try out for the boys' basketball team. What looks like a story of ordinary feminism turns out to be a confrontation between Buffy and a very old power, deadlier than vampires themselves. First Buffy hardcover novel in English. The creature of the day is a monster who can be killed but who immediately reincarnates in a new body, and who is trying to open the road for an even worse demon. In the meantime, the two veteran Buffy authors explore the relationship between Buffy, Angel, and Joyce. Audiobook (read by Charisma Carpenter), New York Simon & Schuster, 1999. Paperback, New York - London - Toronto - Sydney - Singapore, 2000 Helen, a vampire from the ancient Rome with a reputation as slayer of Slayers, comes to Sunnydale seeking the urn with the magical ashes of the demented Emperor Caligula and her former love, Angel. She poisons the whole city and everybody (the Slayerettes included) turns violent against his or her own friends. When Helen is about to cause the vicious goddess Meter to rise again, Xander, Angel and Buffy (who have conserved a grain of sanity) save the day. The mother of all crossovers, i.e. a crossover between Buffy the original movie and Buffy the TV show. Pike, Buffy's girlfriend in L.A. from the movie, shows up unexpectedly in Sunnydale. He is there to seek help from the Slayer in order to save his ass (he pissed off a mighty demon who is out to kill him) but both he and Buffy are not against revamping their old relations. Hence, obvious problems with Angel, while Giles is stalked by old family demons. Not a lot of new mythology, but those who remember the movie would love Pike as redux. Water sports: an oil spill brings to land both a selkie (a cute shape-shifting seal girl, nicknamed "Ariel" by the gang) and a pack of merrows, flesh-eating monsters attacking both humans and vampires. Overcoming the problems created by a Dr. Lee, an academic who once married a selkie, was abandoned by her and now hates her kin, Buffy is finally able to slay the merrows, while a spell by Willow helps Ariel's return to her native ocean. Superwitch Shugra has been reincarnated many times throughout history, hoping to gather enough initiates to connect with the primal universal flow of magick and rule the world. In her latest incarnation, he has chosen to be a Sunnydale High history teacher. Bad call: the Slayer eventually destroys her forever. An entire Civil War family has been turned. When Buffy dusts the two children, Mother Vampire summons Nemesis, goddess of vengeance. Harsh but just, Nemesis sets a trial for Buffy whose prize is her mother's salvation.

Ray GARTON, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Resurrecting Ravana"
Paperback, New York - London - Toronto - Sydney - Tokyo - Singapore: Pocket Books, 2000
Rakshasas, shapeshifting human-eating demons capable of inducing hatred among best friends, descend into Sunnydale and almost succeed in inducing a murderous hatred between Buffy and Willow. Ethan Rayne has unleashed the plague in order to resurrect Ravana, a powerful demon, by using a statuette he has stolen from Benson Lovecraft, an old occult collector patterned after the British magus Aleister Crowley (and described as a former associate of Crowley). Buffy, Angel and the Slayerettes save the day thanks to a carving of Rama (Ravana's old foe) and the arrival in Sunnydale of Lovecraft himself.

First original Angel novel. Apparently, the Angel-Cordelia-Doyle trio has to deal with both the ancient Indonesian demon Latura and the modern Indonesian mob in LA. When Angel looks closer, he discovers that the demon, rather than from Indonesia, in fact comes from Angel's own dark Irish past.
