BRISBANE, Australia - A Christian school has banned the popular Harry Potter children's books from its library, saying they are violent and dangerous. Dr. Chas Gullo of the Christian Outreach College, a private school in Queensland state, said he read one chapter from the latest story about a young magician, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," and was exposed to four murders. "It was pretty gory," Gullo was quoted as saying by Brisbane's Courier-Mail newspaper. Some parents' groups and academics on Tuesday criticized the school's decision, saying the books by J.K. Rowling are fantasy and pose no threat. University of the Sunshine Coast popular culture expert Dr. Karen Brooks said the books encourage children to read and use their imaginations. "I think that in this day and age there's a huge spiritual dearth in our lives," she told ABC radio. |
